CSX Charlotte Subdivision, Bostic - Charlotte

This line was originally the Seaboard Air Line, later Seaboard Coast Line, lastly, Family Lines prior to being folded into the CSX system. Piedmont & Northern's electrified line ran more or less parallel with the former SAL from Mt. Holly, NC to Pinoca yard in Charlotte. CSX Charlotte sub interchanges with the former Clinchfield at Bostic yard in Bostic, NC. Cherryville siding and the area around Charlotte (Pinoca yard, Freedom siding) now have signalling in otherwise DTC terrority.

    Northbound signal at Rudisill St crossing in Cherryville, NC for approaching Q696. The medium approach signal indicated to the engineer this train will go in the siding to meet a southbound. Small trackside sign desiginates TCS begins.

    Old indicator guarding south end of Cherryville siding. There was an approach indicator about two miles from each end in addition to the indicator at each spring switch. All were approach illuminated. Indicators were installed after the head on collision that occurred a few tenths of a mile north of this location. Indicators are still used at Duke siding near Mt.Holly, NC.
    Chessie 8415 leads a hopper train through Waco NC in Sep '88. This train will continue to Shelby, Lattimore, Mooresboro and Ellenboro before it arrives on former Clinchfield rails at Bostic, NC.

    This photo from 11/90 looking railroad south toward Lattimore, NC shows construction of Shelby siding. Part of the original Southern Railway SB roadbed was used for the siding. The old Southern roadbed can be seen in the distance coming from right side of photo behind tall trees. The Seaboard and Southern ran parallel to each other from this point to Conshel. The Southern crossed the Seaboard at grade near Shelby, then again at Lattimore.
